SHSAT 101

October is right around the corner. If your student is in eighth grade, it is time to start preparing them to take the SSAT or SHSAT. If you’re not sure whether or not your student should take the SHSAT, here are some things to consider:

What is the SHSAT?
The SHSAT is an standardized exam taken for entrance into NYC Specialized High Schools.

Who takes the SHSAT?
All eighth and ninth grade NYC residents are eligible to take the exam. It is recommended that your student take the exam in eighth grade as acceptance rates are far lower when taking the test in ninth grade.

Which schools require the SHSAT?

  • Bronx High School of Science

  • Brooklyn Latin School

  • Brooklyn Technical High School

  • High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College

  • High School for American Studies at Lehman College

  • Queens High School for Sciences at York College

  • Staten Island Technical High School

  • Stuyvesant High School

What does the SHSAT test?
There are two required sections to the exam: English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The test is a total of three (3) hours.

How are the students scored?
Students are given a “scaled score” for each section of the test, and a composite score for the entire test. The highest composite score is 700.

How to register for the SHSAT?
The only way to register for the exam is through your middle school guidance counselor. Tell them right away if your student plans to take the SHSAT.
